PREFA and coated aluminium

Aluminium roofs

Aluminium is the lightest of the metal roofing systems and the one with the widest colour range. Where a structure will not carry the weight of zinc or copper, or where the specification calls for a particular colour, aluminium is usually the answer.

When aluminium is the right choice

Weight is the usual reason. Garden rooms, timber framed extensions, balconies, canopies and porches often cannot take a heavier covering without strengthening the structure first, and aluminium avoids that cost.

Colour is the other reason. Aluminium is coated rather than left to weather, so it comes in the full RAL range and stays the colour you chose. If the architect has specified a particular grey to match window frames or cladding, aluminium will match it exactly where zinc and copper cannot.

Systems and profiles

We fit PREFA and other coated aluminium systems in standing seam, and in interlocking panel and shingle profiles for walls. The same folding equipment we use for zinc handles aluminium, so fascias, soffits, copings and rainwater goods can all be made to match on site.

Maintenance

A coated aluminium roof needs very little. It does not weather or change colour the way zinc and copper do, so beyond clearing gutters and the occasional wash down there is nothing to do. The coating carries its own manufacturer guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

Modern coatings hold their colour well and carry a manufacturer guarantee. Very strong colours on a south facing elevation will soften slightly over many years, which is true of any coated product.

Usually yes. Give us the RAL number from the window supplier and we will match the roof, fascias and rainwater goods to it.

The metal itself lasts extremely well. The variable is the coating rather than the substrate. For a garden room or an extension that is not a concern; for a landmark building we would usually steer you towards zinc or copper.
